Also for BIOS you have to make that partition active (does not need to be done for GPT partitioned disks). Once I used my external SSD in the similar way, but I think that my drive was formatted in DOS partitioning mode (not GPT) so I also executed command "bootsect /nt60 S: /mbr /force" which also gave it ability to be used for old BIOS computers (at least those that can boot from USB devices, S: is the letter assigned to the partition on the external SSD). UEFI firmware has built in support to read FAT32 and NTFS partitions so it can find the EFI directory where boot loader resides. If you are going to use it on newer computers running UEFI firmware (not old BIOS) then all that you need is to create one partition on the external drive, formatted in FAT32 or NTFS (use NTFS if you have oversized custom image, INSTALL.WIM file) and copy files from Windows 10 ISO to that partition.
